EVALUATION PROCEDURES

Written Tests: To obtain a job in certain fields, such as criminal justice and secretarial, you must pass a written and/or performance test. The tests are offered on the following basis. Proper identification with your picture and signature, such as a driver’s license, is required for admission to all examinations.

Scheduled or Reserved Seating Examinations: Written tests are offered on certain Saturdays in selected cities. If you request a scheduled examination and your application is approved, you will receive an admission slip by mail for the next available test session showing the address of the testing center you have chosen and the date and time of your appointment. This may take a month or longer due to limited seating.

Select ONE city where you wish to take a written test on Saturday:

Albany [U]

Augusta - [S]

Columbus - [Y]

Gainesville - [F]

Macon- [M]

Statesboro - [H]

Valdosta - [L]

Retest Policy: Your score will normally remain on the list of available applicants for six months from the date of your examination (and, in many cases, you may also extend your score for an additional six months). Generally, you can apply to be evaluated or to take a written test for the same job only three times in one year, with a minimum 30 day waiting period between examinations. Upon re-examination, the higher of your scores will generally be kept. The lower score will not be accessible to employing agencies.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR APPLICANTS WITH DISABILITIES

For Scheduled testing purposes only, do you require special examination accommodations because of a disability? If so, attach a note to this application asking us to call. PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS ARE NECESSARY. Note that in order to receive accommodations for testing, you must (1) at least one (1) day PRIOR to the test; (2) have the accommodation authorized BEFORE being tested; and (3) provide documentation to show the need for the accommodation (if requested). If you have questions about the examination procedure for applicants with disabilities, you may call the Georgia Relay Service at 7-1-1.

Training and Experience Ratings: If you apply for a job that does not require a written test, your evaluation will be based on the experience, education, and training

you describe on your application. You will also be evaluated on any supplemental information you may be asked to provide.

VETERAN’S PREFERENCE: The laws of the State of Georgia require that points be added to passing examination scores for certain veterans and combat troops of the Armed Forces of the United States. The following types of preference are currently granted. If you want to apply for Veteran’s Preference, check the type below and attach copies of the appropriate document(s) to your application. Copies cannot be returned. (SPB 16.102)

Common mistakes

When applying for employment with the State of Georgia using the MS27-1 form, applicants often make several common mistakes. Each of these missteps can potentially delay the hiring process or impact the applicant's chances of securing the desired job. Attention to detail and thoroughness are key when filling out this form. Here's a look at seven common pitfalls to avoid:

  1. Omitting Contact Information: Neglecting to provide accurate and complete contact information, including a daytime telephone number and email address, can hinder prompt communication. It is crucial for potential employers to have reliable means to reach applicants.
  2. Incorrect Employment Eligibility Details: Failing to accurately complete the employment eligibility section, especially questions regarding citizenship, authorization to work in the U.S., previous State employment, and felony convictions, can result in automatic disqualification or delays.
  3. Not Specifying Job Title and Code: Applicants sometimes forget to include the specific job title and job code they are applying for. This information is vital for the application to be considered for the correct position.
  4. Incomplete Education Information: Leaving the education section blank or partially filled can affect an applicant's desirability. Clearly listing high school completion, vocational training, and higher education, along with the field of study and credit hours, is important for showcasing qualifications.
  5. Ignoring Language Skills and Certifications: Overlooking the sections that inquire about language abilities, licenses, and certifications can be a missed opportunity to stand out. These qualifications can be particularly important for certain positions and should be accurately detailed.
  6. Leaving Employment History Incomplete: An incomplete work history, including voluntary or military experience, can raise red flags. It's essential to detail each position held, the duration, primary duties, and achievements to provide a comprehensive look at the applicant's work background.
  7. Not Indicating Employment Availability: Applicants often forget to list the counties where they are willing to work. The State of Georgia offers a wide range of geographic locations for employment, and indicating flexibility or specific preferences can be beneficial.

Avoiding these common errors can greatly improve the chances of success when applying for State of Georgia positions using the MS27-1 form. Being meticulous, providing thorough and accurate information, and reviewing the application for completeness before submission are essential steps in the application process.

Documents used along the form

When navigating the employment process within the State of Georgia, the STATE OF GEORGIA APPLICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT (MS27-1) form is a crucial starting point for candidates. However, to complete a comprehensive application package, applicants may need to prepare additional forms or documents. The variety and nature of these documents can vary depending on the job position, but typically include the following:

  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV): While the MS27-1 form requires detailed employment history, a resume or CV allows applicants to present their professional experience, educational background, skills, and accomplishments in a format that highlights their best qualifications for the job.
  • Cover Letter: This document provides applicants with the opportunity to directly address the hiring committee or manager, explain their interest in the position, and discuss how their background makes them a perfect fit for the role.
  • References: A list of professional references, typically including names, job titles, relationships to the applicant, and contact information, can be required to further validate the applicant's qualifications and professional reliability.
  • Proof of Eligibility to Work: As indicated in the MS27-1 form, applicants must meet state and federal employment eligibility requirements. Therefore, documents such as a U.S. passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card might be requested to prove United States citizenship or authorization to work in the country.

Together with the State of Georgia Application for Employment form, these documents allow applicants to comprehensively present their qualifications and readiness for the position they are applying for. Assembling a thorough and thoughtful application package can significantly affect an applicant's chances of securing employment with the State of Georgia. It is advisable for applicants to check specific job postings for any additional documents that may be required and to ensure all materials are prepared in accordance with the job application’s instructions.

Similar forms

  • The Federal Employment Application is similar to the State of Georgia Application Form MS27-1 as both solicit comprehensive work history, educational background, and personal information to assess eligibility and fit for employment. The Federal form, like its state counterpart, often requires information on work eligibility in the United States, veteran status, and may request details of any criminal history to comply with federal and state employment eligibility requirements.

  • A Job Application for Local Government Positions shares similarities in structure and content with the MS27-1 form, requesting detailed information on the applicant's education, work experience, and certifications. Both forms are designed to evaluate the candidate's qualifications for government employment, including positions at the county or city level, and may inquire about the applicant's willingness to relocate or work in specific geographic areas.

  • The Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Application form, while more specialized, bears resemblances to the MS27-1 form in its requirements for specific certifications and licenses. Applicants must provide information on their current valid driver's license, similar to how the MS27-1 form asks for details on Georgia licenses and certifications, including a commercial driver’s license if applicable.

  • A College or University Job Application parallels the MS27-1 form in its detailed sections on educational background, degrees obtained, and areas of specialization. Both forms aim to gather comprehensive data on the applicant’s academic qualifications and fields of experience, which are crucial for roles in educational institutions as well as some state positions.

  • The Professional Certification or License Renewal Application shares common elements with the State of Georgia MS27-1 form, particularly in sections that request information on existing certifications and licenses. Both types of applications require the applicant to list any relevant certifications, such as teacher certification or peace officer standards and training certificates, along with their expiration dates to verify current qualifications and legal eligibility for specific professional roles.

Dos and Don'ts

When filling out the State Of Georgia Application MS27-1 form, there are specific dos and don'ts that applicants need to be aware of to ensure their application is properly completed and considered. Following these guidelines can significantly impact the success of your application.

What You Should Do:

  • Provide accurate and complete information: Ensure all sections of the application form are filled out with current, accurate, and complete details. This includes your contact information, employment eligibility, job preferences, education, and work history.
  • Answer employment eligibility questions truthfully: Be honest when answering questions about your citizenship, work authorization, previous employment with the State of Georgia government, and felony convictions.
  • Include all relevant certifications and licenses: If you possess any Georgia licenses, certifications, or endorsements that are relevant to the job you are applying for, make sure to include them on the application along with their expiration dates.
  • Sign the certification section: Ensure you read the certification carefully and sign the application. For electronic submissions, entering your name in the signature field is necessary to validate the application.

What You Shouldn't Do:

  • Omit your employment history: Do not leave out any part of your work history, including military and volunteer experience. Failing to give detailed information about each job held may disqualify you from employment consideration.
  • Provide false information: Avoid intentionally providing false information on your application or attachments. This is a violation of state law and can lead to your application being rejected.
  • Ignore the requirement for attachments when necessary: If you answer "Yes" to having been dismissed from a State of Georgia government position or having been convicted of a felony, you must attach an explanation. Failing to do so can invalidate your application.
  • Forget to list job codes and titles: Do not leave the section on specific job titles sought and job codes blank. If you're unsure about the correct job titles or codes, use the resources provided on Careers.ga.gov or visit the Georgia Department of Labor Career Centers for assistance.

Misconceptions

The State of Georgia Application MS27-1 form is a vital component of the employment process for positions within the State of Georgia. However, several misconceptions have emerged regarding its completion and the broader significance it holds within the hiring framework. Addressing these misunderstandings can clarify the process not only for potential applicants but also for the public to understand the state's commitment to fair employment practices. Here, we correct ten common misconceptions about this form:

  • All jobs with the State of Georgia require this specific form: While the MS27-1 form is widely used for state employment, not every state job requires it. Some positions may have specialized application processes.

  • Resumes are not necessary if the form is completed: While the form captures comprehensive information, supplying a resume can provide context and highlight achievements that the form's structure may not accommodate.
